The Free Church of Scotland Ministers' Conference was an annual gathering of Presbyterian ministers in Scotland.
History
In the mid 19th century, after the Declaration of Arbroath (1320) and the Solemn League and Covenant (1643), the various Presbyterian denominations, including the Free Church of Scotland, tried to come together in support of the Reformation Cause against the Catholic powers. In 1843, a joint meeting of ministers and laymen was held in Edinburgh. With over 250 ministers, and over 3000 laymen present, this was the first ministers' conference and the fourth Presbyterian General Assembly, called to declare that "it is in the judgment of the free ministers of this Realm that the Kingdom of Christ is in great danger".
Among the laymen present was William Ewart, later Bishop of Moray, Ross and Caithness.
The conference was held every three years after that, until the 1910 meeting, after which the gatherings were held annually until the 1960 meeting.
The next conference was in 1967, the year of the change of name of the Free Church of Scotland to the Presbyterian Church of Scotland.
